Munich English Choir

The Munich English Choir is a group of amateur and professional singers with a passion for choral music. Founded in 2010 by the English Organist and Choirmaster Stephen Norton, the choir now has about 32 members. The highlights of each year are the Services of Lessons and Carols sung on the eve of the 1st Advent in the Abbey Church of St Ottilien and on the third Wednesday of December at St Willibrord's Church in Munich. The choir sings regularly for Choral Evensong and performs concerts, including in the Lange Nacht der Musik, as well as undertaking tours abroad.

Stephen Norton,
Founder

Stephen Norton, geboren in Derbyshire, England, erhielt seine Schulausbildung als musikalischer Stipendiat an der Bedford School. Stephen wurde Organist an der Millhouses Methodist Church in Sheffield, England, wo er auch die Stelle des Kirchenmusikers übernahm. Nach seinem Universitätsabschluss im Jahr 2001 war Stephen als Kirchenmusiker in der Pfarrkirche St. Mary’s, Hitchin, tätig. Er leitete einen Chor mit 15 Jugendlichen und 18 Erwachsenen, der zwei Gottesdienste pro Woche gestaltet.

2002 zog Stephen nach München und war hier zunächst als zweiter Organist in der Kath. Pfarrgemeinde Heilig Kreuz, München-Forstenried tätig. Danach war er stellv. Kirchenmusiker in der Kath. Pfarrgemeinde Maria Himmelfahrt, München-Allach und von 2004 bis 2008 Kirchenmusiker in der Kath. Pfarrei Maria Trost, München-Untermenzing. Stephen war von 2008 bis 2013 stellv. Organist in der Kath. Pfarrgemeinde Maria Himmelfahrt, München-Allach und ab 2013 „Artist in Residence“ der „Church of the Ascension“ Episkopalkirche in München.

Im Jahr 2010 gründete Stephen den „Munich English Choir“. Mehr als ein Jahrzehnt lang leitete er den Chor mit hoher Professionalität, Einfühlungsvermögen und persönlicher Ausstrahlung. Der Chor führte regelmäßig Choral Evensongs und Services of Lessons and Carols auf und ging auch auf Tournee in mehrere Kathedralen in Großbritannien. Als Stephen im Jahr 2020 unerwartet verstarb, war der Chor tief erschüttert. Die Mitglieder beschlossen jedoch, die Arbeit des Chores fortzusetzen, um seine Arbeit und seinen Geist zu ehren.

Dr Nick Ukiah,
Choirmaster

Dr Nick Ukiah was born in London and grew up singing in his local Church of England choir, playing the piano and struggling with the oboe. He studied at Selwyn College, University of Cambridge, where he held Choral and Academic Exhibitions and took voice lessons with baritone Nigel Wickens. He later sang semi-professionally and with many choirs in London, including Pegasus ("London's most exciting chamber choir") and the Choir Of The Orchestra Of St John's, Smith Square. In 1999, having completed his PhD in Slavonic Philology he emigrated to Warsaw, Poland, where he is still based today. He also spent a number of years in Berlin, studying voice privately with Terrence O'Brien, and trained in opera at the Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts in Tilburg, Netherlands. He became assistant director of Chór Warszawski (Warsaw) in 2019 and director of the Munich English Choir in 2022. He works as a writer, editor and translator.

Jeff Leipsic,
Deputy Choirmaster

Jeff Leipsic was born in New York. His love for choral music began in the 9th grade when he first sung in his high school’s a cappella choir, becoming the first ever student conductor of that choir in his senior year. He graduated from the Mannes College of Music, New York City in 1970 earning a bachelor of science degree, his major being orchestral conducting which he studied under Carl Bamberger. He subsequently taught music for five years in the school system of West Haven, Connecticut, completing his Master of Music Education at the University of Connecticut during that time. Beginning with his teenage years, he developed a passion for opera which has continued unabated until the present. Upon his move from the United States to Europe in 1976, he began to use his knowledge of everything operatic by having performance reviews published in both German and English journals. He now reviews performances in Munich and Bayreuth exclusively for Opera News, a publication of the Metropolitan Opera Guild, New York. From 1986 until his retirement, he worked fulltime for the Bavarian Radio, Munich. In the fall of 1986 he joined the choir of the Anglican Church of the Ascension, Munich. He became assistant conductor of that choir several years later, taking over as chief conductor and music director upon the retirement of the choir’s founding director Dr Frederick Mayer in 2004. In 2013 he joined the Munich English Choir as a singer, continuing to date in that capacity but assuming in addition the position of Associate Conductor in 2017.

Christian Schramm,
Organist

Christian Schramm wurde in Mindelheim im Unterallgäu geboren. Er studierte an der Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst MOZARTEUM in Salzburg. Seine Orgelausbildung schloss er mit dem Katholischen Kirchenmusik B- und A-Diplom, sowie mit dem Evangelischen Kirchenmusik B-Diplom ab. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt seiner Weiterbildung galt der Instrumentalpädagogik.

Christian Schramm war schon während seines Studiums in diverse Stellen als Organist und Chorleiter in Salzburg und Umgebung tätig. Seit 2000 ist er hauptamtlicher Kirchenmusiker der Pfarrei St. Martin, Stadtkirche Germering. Er hat dort verschiedene Chöre (PfarrSingSchule, VocalEnsemble St. Martin u.a.) neu gegründet.

Des Weiteren ist er seit 2015 Vorsitzender des Diözesanverbands PUERI CANTORES im Erzbistum München und Freising (Kinder- und Jugendchorverband) und seit 2019 hat er die Leitung der evangelischen Kantorei St. Johannes in Gilching.

Elijah McCormack,
Male soprano

Elijah McCormack performs in both concert and opera primarily in the United States.

He has sung in major works such as Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, St John Passion and St Matthew Passion, as well as Handel’s Messiah and others, with organisations such as Seraphic Fire, Washington Bach Consort, Ars Lyrica Houston, Dallas Bach Society, American Bach Soloists and Ensemble Altera. He has participated in several world premieres with new music ensemble The Crossing. Opera credits include the role of Bell* Cohen in Lowell House Opera’s world premiere of NIGHTTOWN; Haymarket Opera Company’s L’incoronazione di Poppea (Amore/Valletto); and IlluminArts Miami’s Turn of the Screw (Miles).

Accolades include the Meyerson/Zanger award for second place in the Oratorio Society of New York’s Solo Competition; finalist for the Keller Distinguished Bach Musician Award; and semi-finalist in Poeme Harmonique’s Corneille Baroque Competition. He received his Master’s degree in Historical Performance at Indiana University, where he studied with Steven Rickards.

Gudrun Forstner,
Organist

Studium und Abschlüsse an der Staatlichen Hochschule für Musik (München) in folgenden Fächern: Konzertfach Orgel (Konzert-Diplom und anschließend Meisterklassen-Diplom), Schulmusik (Gymnasiallehrfach: 1. und 2. Staatsexamen) und Katholische Kirchenmusik (A-Diplom).

Ihre Orgellehrer waren zunächst der Regensburger Domorganist Eberhard Kraus - dann an der Musikhochschule in München die Professoren Gerhard Weinberger (3 Jahre Gaststudium bis zum
Abitur) und Franz Lehrndorfer (ab dem Abitur). Interpretations-kurse bei den Professoren Daniel Roth und Marie Claire Alain rundeten die Ausbildung ab.

Nach 5-jähriger Tätigkeit als Organistin an der ehemaligen Klosterkirche in Tegernsee (während des Studiums) hatte Gudrun Forstner 3 Jahre lang hauptberuflich in Vollzeit die A-Stelle „St. Johann Baptist“ in München-Haidhausen als Kirchenmusikerin inne. Inzwischen ist sie hauptberuflich als OStR’in für Musik tätig. Darüber hinaus arbeitet sie bei Konzerten und Festgottesdiensten künstlerisch zusammen mit professionellen Orchestern und Solisten sowie mit renommierten Chören; auch ist sie am Continuo sowie als Konzertorganistin gefragt, z. B. bei Kulturfestivals wie „Internationale Konzerte im Hohen Dom zu Passau“ oder „Orgeltriduum in der Basilika Marienstatt“.
